City Slickers Not Always Ready
Country Living May Mean Big Changes
A number of homeowners are fleeing urban areas for the countryside without considering the changes they will be forced to make.
Before moving to a rural locale, buyers are urged to determine the availability of electric, water, gas, sewage, telephone and cable services; find out whether sidewalks and curbs will be installed; ask about snow, garbage and leaf removal; monitor traffic; and see if a good school is within walking distance or offers bus service.
Many new homeowners in rural communities complain about noisy, slow-moving farm equipment; wafting chemicals used in agricultural operations; wild animals; smelly farms; and longer travel distances. At the same time, long-time rural residents are worried about the strain placed on schools, police departments and other services by the influx of new residents.
Bowling Green State University associate geography professor Jeff Gordon says greenbelts - or rings of undeveloped land around cities - would solve some of the problems by minimizing sprawl and protecting farmland. |
