Countdown to the Big Move
Moving Plans Help Ensure Smooth Transitions
These "Countdown to Moving Day" recommendations help those who are relocating to prepare as many as eight weeks in advance. At that point, a study of the floor plan of their new residence should help homeowners determine which belongings they will keep. They should also use this time to confirm that their homeowners' insurance policy covers their belongings during the move and hire a mover after considering estimates from several companies.
Within six weeks of the move, they should inform their family, friends, and others of their new address and get rid of everything that will not be brought to the new home. Four weeks before the move, they should begin packing, collecting important personal papers, and making sure that furniture and rugs are fixed or cleaned. Relocating homeowners should arrange to have their utilities turned off and reconnected at their new property within three weeks of the move and also transfer bank accounts, close safety deposit boxes, and cancel newspaper delivery the week before.
A couple of days prior to the big day, they should make sure that the mover packs their belongings, that their valuables are ready to be carried with them, and that their refrigerator and freezer are defrosted and dried.
On moving day, they should monitor the hired help, read and understand all papers before signing, carry copies of the bill of lading and inventory, and walk through the home a final time to make sure everything has been removed. After paying the mover, they should watch as boxes and furniture are unloaded and unpacked, listing anything that is broken or missing.
