Careful Stay on the Safe Side When Selling Your Home Though real estate-related crimes are rare, it's imperative that agents and sellers take safety precautions against robbery, rape, or worse. Sellers should never allow a prospective buyer into their home without a licensed agent. Even then, the agent should make sure the buyer is prequalified and serious about viewing the property. Because open houses do not require interested parties to show identification or sign the guest roster, they offer a perfect opportunity for thieves, most of whom target jewellery, personal electronics, and prescription drugs. Fortunately, today's booming market, with homes selling in a day or two, has allowed many sellers to forego open houses. When this is not the case, however, sellers should remove all their valuables; check doors and windows after all showings to make sure they have not been unlocked for easy access later on; and refuse to show the home without an appointment or when they are alone. Finally, owners should make sure their agent doesn't let anyone know when they are on vacation.
