Tip: Smart Design Is the Difference Between "Planting" and "Landscaping"

Planting is the random placement of trees, flowers and other plantings: "Let’s buy a maple tree; now where shall we plant it?" "I have always wanted a beautiful rose garden; wouldn't they look nice over by the back fence?" Sometimes this approach works; but most times it creates confusion and disarray.

Landscaping uses a formal plan. It is an art form which uses concepts like country, formal, or Japanese as an example. The large areas are outlined: existing trees and structures, social space: areas for gathering and play areas (a pool, tennis court). Then there's the placement of large trees, shrubs and flower gardens. Lastly, you fill in the all-important details:  a gazebo, decorative ponds, planters, bird baths, outdoor lighting (in the ground and under the eaves). If you plan right, you can be as creative as you please, creating your own personal piece of art.

Choose trees, shrubs and flowers that will keep the yard colorful all year round. Note that different varieties bloom at different times during a season. Create a focal point, keep in mind the view of the yard from inside the house. Since nobody wants to be a slave to gardening, plan for easy maintenance as well as good looks - consider perennials and ground cover plants. Smart landscaping is limited only to your imagination.
